About Bharathanathiyam

Bharatanatyam is the oldest and one of the most refined form of Indian classical dance. This dance was prevalent in ancient Tamil Nadu and was known as the Natya Shastra by Bharata Muni. Bharatanatyam- as the name suggests is a combination of “Bha” – denoting bhavam signifying the body language/expressions; “Ra” denoting Ragam- signifying the music associated to the dance and “Ta” denotes Talam – signifying the rhythmic footwork; and Natyam means dance. Hence, collectively Bharatanatyam would mean a dance form with certain expressions/body language, graceful movements, dancing with rhythmic footwork to melodious music. Bharatanatyam has been adapted to many styles – namely Thanjore, Melattur, Pandanallur, Vazhuvoor and Kalkshetra. At Nadanta, we follow the Thanjore style. Thanajavur Quartet Chinnayya, Ponnayya, Sivanandam and Vadivelu Pillai were four brothers who developed Bharatanatyam and gave it the form which we witness in modern day as MARGAM.

Bharatanatyam is traditionally a team performance that consists of artist(s) accompanied by musicians and a vocalist. This time we have ventured to bring forth the performances along with “live” music with artists from India, Belgium and France. You will also be amazed to learn that Bharatanatyam is not only significant culturally, but it is also based on geometrical shapes and angles as this dance form is highly codified and schematized accommodating the different kinds of learners and hence is culturally relevant across globe.
